Focusing on our purpose makes us more effective FROM THE PRESIDENT By Beth Davis

Beth DavisEconomic development is a "hot topic" right now, as we all examine where we are and where we're headed, especially in the wake of the worst recession since the 1930s. Economic development is a political slogan, a community mantra and at the top of everyone's list of "must-do" items for the new year.

What makes South Dakota Rural Enterprise unique in this recent flood of attention for economic development is contained in our organization's stated purpose: To stimulate financial and human investment in South Dakota communities that are invested in themselves.

We don't claim to be the solution to any community's economic challenges. We are not white knights charging to the rescue. We don't even claim to be the smartest, most experienced people at the table. It's true, we do have some innovative programs that encourage folks in South Dakota communities to take a fresh look at where they are and where they're going. We do believe that entrepreneurs should be nurtured and regarded as the foundation for hometown business growth. And we have forged partnerships that help bring resources to bear on South Dakota's economic realities.

But our purpose statement is the litmus test we use for everything we do. Our job is to stimulate investment-and not just financial investment, but also human investment-in those communities that understand clearly that they must be active partners in the process. Investment of financial and human resources is evidence that your community wants to not just survive, but to prosper. We intentionally work toward that purpose-to do what we can to see South Dakota communities prosper.

When we work with communities that are invested in themselves, good things happen. We stimulate other resources, connect local citizens with other partners for prosperity and illuminate new ways to create economic opportunity. It takes time, it takes money and it takes people-mostly the involvement of local people-to make exciting things happen. By fulfilling our purpose of stimulating financial and human investment, the communities with whom we partner are realizing their visions of the future. We are proud to play a role in their successes.
